One result of the Tricontinental Conference—a 1966 historic meeting in Havana of delegates from national liberation movements across Africa, Asia and Latin America was the formation of OSPAAAL, the Organization of Solidarity with Peoples of Asia, Africa, and Latin America (check out the book Armed by Design!). Based in Cuba, it was intended to provide both rhetorical and material solidarity to Third World Liberation movements. One of the main forms this took was its printed cultural output, often published in multiple languages — the brilliantly designed and brightly colored posters, in particular, are responsible for much of visual imaginary of international struggle. These posters were distributed—and popularized—by being folded up and given away for free inside issues of OSPAAAL’s Tricontinental magazine. While music wasn’t a cultural form OSPAAAL did much organizing around, it was central to many of the movements that it was connected to. This mixtape and zine is a selection of songs from these movements, a loose map of some of the sounds that might have been heard in the OSPAAAL offices.
