“Hombre Nuevo” features chiming eighties post-Punk in a manner which recalls Manchester UK’s finest The Chameleons. It’s incredibly atmospheric with strong ambient qualities. A terrific opener. “Desilucion” has Black Sun Ensemble-style psychedelia added to the proceedings, as well as the dusty, expansive Desert Rock à la Palm Desert heroes Yawning Man, which give the whole affair an almost wonderfully haunting quality. “Oscuridad,” compared to the sparseness of the preceding track, is a lot more bracing, packed as it is with energy and possessed with a surprising 2000’s Indie Rock bounce. The band displays far more attitude and passion than bands of that era, their contemporaries. A surprisingly effective piece, considering.

...“Golpe Al Barrio” has some very cool Clash vibes, straight out of Combat Rock and particularly tracks like “Know Your Rights”. In fact, it would have sounded ideally suited for movies such as Alex Cox’s Straight to Hell, which coincidentally Joe Strummer starred in- superb. “Cierro Los Ojos” is pure Wipers, the dark post-Punk and proto-Grunge of the highly underrated yet massively influential Portland trio plain for all to see. With Greg Sage and co. not releasing any music in quite some time, this is the next best thing. “Tres” is brooding, typical of a tune influenced by Deathrock and Goth-Rock, which nods to The Cure’s very early works before they discovered Pop Music and New Order. “Nunca Escucharas” has a little more punch, with an increase in pace never sacrificing melody, jangly Guitars aplenty, and an anthemic infectiousness that will have you jamming it repeatedly.

Surf Rock is damn good; it’sa lot darker and more menacing than people give it credit for, and “Tu Camino” is living proof. JFA and Agent Orange fans will absolutely eat this up. “Cicatrizes” nods to Joy Division, especially the glorious motorik beats of Steven Morris. The title, which translates as “scars,” is heart-wrenching and sees frontman Abarca pouring his heart and soul out while the music provides a suitably sombre backdrop, a definite highlight on the album. “A Los Que Deje Atras” is Joe Wood-era TSOL with the bluesier tendencies making it a certifiable fit on the criminally overlooked Revenge. The perfect conclusion to the album.

Hombre Nuevo is an exercise in sublime subtlety, catching you unawares with its rampant melancholy and hooks. A damn fine release."
