"The album opens with a 3-minute long windy atmospheric intro "Storm of Damnation" after which "Hades" blasts you into hell with it's ferocious tremolo riff and Quorthon's evil fucking vocals. Whether it be grunts, shouts or groans, he just sells the mood of "demon coming to claim your soul" throughout the entire album. Now granted, "Hades" is the most stereotypical example of a speedy song on this album, but there are others like my personal favorites "Reaper" and "Armageddon". "Reaper" specifically is just such an evil track, from the riffs, the lyrics and vocals, Of course, not to get monotonous, there are mid-tempo tracks that serve quite nicely to counterbalance the speedy ones like "Raise the Dead!" or "Necromansy". Not like it would have gotten boring anyway, since none of the songs here overstay their welcome. Hell, there are absolutely zero songs on here that surpass the 4 minute mark. Sometimes it is better to just have simple songs with a simple riff.

The production is delightfully low quality. It all sounds like it was recorded in a cave where the satanic cult is meeting. I guess if you want that quintessential black metal production, just record in your garage and call it a studio. Granted this happened due to budget reasons (they had to run the tape recorder at half-speed to fit every track here) but this production style is something Quorthon would do on nearly all of his albums, for better or for worse.

I already spoke of Quorthon's vocal performance, but I really want to draw attention to his guitar performance here. He sells completely not just the vocals, but every single tremolo or mid-tempo riff on here, so it never gets boring. The drums and the bass are simple, but like with Quorthon's guitar, they are also quite energetic, making this entire album just fun to listen to. Really, if there is anything I have to complain about, it's the fact that the songs do sometimes come off as too simplistic and short. But then again, it's not really album's fault that what followed was just so, so much meatier and ambitious. But then again, I am nitpicking here. No tracks here are weak and for guys new into black metal, I'd say this is a mandatory purchase. It's not ambitious like anything Emperor or Immortal did, but sometimes all you want is a short 2-minute song with a single, good riff that doesn't waste your time."
