This Weeks New Releases – October 6th

Lots of new stuff came in the week. Heres a few we were really excited about…

While past albums operated on the intimacy of stripped-down folk music (The Grime and the Glow, Unknown Rooms), or the throbbing pulse of supplemental electronics (Pain Is Beauty, Abyss), Chelsea Wolfe’s sixth official album Hiss Spun wrings it’s exquisiteness out of a palette of groaning bass, pounding drums, and crunching distortion. Recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge), the album was conceived as an emotional purge, a means of coming to terms with the tumult of the outside world by exploring the complexities of one’s inner unrest. “I’m at odds with myself,” she explains. “I got tired of trying to disappear. The record became very personal in that way. I wanted to open up more, but also create my own reality.” Hiss Spun features contributions by Aaron Turner (Old Man Gloom, SUMAC) and Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age, Failure).

BOMBARDER – Bez Milosti LP
Born under the political strife that led to the Balkan conflicts of the early 1990s, Bombarder formed in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herrzegovina) in 1986. Although the band played a style of speed metal most heavily influenced by the likes of Exciter and Motorhead, Bombarder never reached the same level of exposure, due in part to their country’s geopolitical isolation and the aforementioned turmoil that had begun to engulf their homeland. In 1989, the band released its first album, “Speed Kill,” on the obscure Yugoslavian label, Panonija Koncert, in a limited pressing on cassette only.  Two years later, in 1991, the band returned to the same Vogue studio in which the debut was born in order to record their second album, “Bez Milosti (No Mercy),” which was released on vinyl LP and cassette. In reverence to these historic documents of Evil Slavic Speed Metal past, Nuclear War Now! proudly presents vinyl reissues of “Speed Kill” and “Bez Milosti,” which include both albums available separately on black vinyl. Since the master reels were lost during the war, great care was taken to procure the best sources available and the sound was properly remastered and restored by the venerable James Plotkin. The resulting product is one that calls appropriate attention to two speed metal relics that carry equal potency today as they did when originally conceived.  (Nuclear War Records #357/#358)

Since setting the scuzz-punk gutter a blaze with the first 1997 release of the EPILEPTIX, then the increasingly influential (and downright killer) crew, the CLONE DEFECTS and HUMAN EYE! In the last 20 years, Detroit’s TIMMY VULGAR has continued to release obscure-o, underdog music. Backed up by two mental ward escapees, JEFF GIANT and BLAKE “BOVVER” HILL, this new record is heavy and mean. Raw-as-ever acid glam, punk, psych, stomp, rock’n’roll! Aware of the evil world around them, this is the soundtrack for the apocalypse!”—Eric Davidson. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl.

C.H.E.W./RASH – split 7”
Two provocative and dynamic Chicago bands, each hammering through their songs with a single-minded intensity. C.H.E.W. submerge the occasional post-punk element into an aggressive and charging sonic fray (think RUDIMENTARY PENI’s quirkiness), while RASH continue to screech and squall their way through their face-melting hardcore compositions not unlike RAW NERVE. Both provide a loud and dark addition to hardcore punk in 2017.  (Slugsalt Records #10)

CONVERGE – I Can Tell You About Pain 7”
Epitaph and Deathwish are proud to announce “I Can Tell You About Pain b/w Eve” from aggressive music pioneers Converge. This two-song 7″ release is the first new music from the band since their highly regarded 2012 album “All We Love We Leave Behind.” Upon first listen, it’s apparent that Converge has evolved exponentially in those years.  (Deathwish Records #199)

FACELESS BURIAL – Grotesque Miscreation LP

Coming from the underlands of scorched minds and poisonous everything, FACELESS BURIAL have arrived to ruin you with 34 minutes of blast-surging, malformed death metal mayhem. Hyper-menacing. Grinding. Dirty. Death. Members of AGENTS OF ABHORRENCE, WHITE WALLS and INTERNAL ROT if you’re keeping score. 666 copies on shrouded mystery colored vinyl housed in a heavy duty reverse board jacket adorned with art by XAVIER IRVINE. Recorded by FINN KEANE, Xavier Irvine. Mastered by MIKEY YOUNG

ORB – Naturality LP

An exciting development from under strange Australian lab-lights: ORB re-spawn from last year’s Birth with a further mutated slab of paranoid heavy shred, Naturality. They bring the dread with a kinetic muscularity and a pleasantly evolving synthetic strangeness, as if having eaten of the wrong part of the garden, causing familiar things start to seem less so. The effects of these spores on the modern brain, already clogged with a steady drip of zips and zooms, are fresh and confusing. ORB are young and fleet fingered, and certainly know their way around a riff, but bring everything into an almost alien clarity both blunted and futuristic. ORB, you see, have ripened quite radically, and one can only think at an accelerated pace upon their travels with King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. This album finds them sprouting new appendages and clawing at their enclosures. This is potent stuff—be careful!

180 gram vinyl LP pressing, includes digital download. This long-playing record, a thing we made in the midst of communal mess, raising dogs and children. Eyes up and filled with dreadful joy – we aimed for wrong notes that explode, a quiet muttering amplified heavenward. We recorded it all in a burning motorboat. 1. UNDOING A LUCIFERIAN TOWERS – Look at that f***ing skyline! Big lazy money writ in dull marble obelisks! Imagine all those buildings much later on, hollowed out and stripped bare of wires and glass, listen – the wind is whistling through all 3,000 of it’s burning window-holes! 2. BOSSES HANG – Labor, alienated from the wealth it creates, so that holy cow, most of us live precariously! Kicking at it, but barely hanging on! Also – the proud illuminations of our shortened lives! Also – more of us than them! Also – what we need now is shovels, wells, and barricades! 3. FAM / FAMINE – How they kill us = absentee landlord, burning high-rise. The loud panics of child-policemen and their exploding trigger-hands. With the dull edge of an arbitrary meritocracy. Neglect, cancer maps, drone strike, famine. The forest is burning and soon they’ll hunt us like wolves. 4. ANTHEM FOR NO STATE – Canada, emptied of it’s minerals and dirty oil. Emptied of it’s trees and water. A crippled thing, drowning in a puddle, covered in ants. The ocean doesn’t give a shit because it knows it’s dying too.

MARILYN MANSON – Heaven Upside Down LP

2017 release. Heaven Upside Down is the tenth studio album by shock rock band Marilyn Manson. Includes the first single “We Know Where You F***ing Live”. Marilyn Manson – the band – was formed by Marilyn Manson – the singer – in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1989. Originally named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, they gained a local cult following in South Florida in the early 1990s with their theatrical live performances. In 1993, they were the first act signed to Trent Reznor’s Nothing Records label. Until 1996, the name of each member was created by combining the first name of an iconic female sex symbol and the last name of an iconic serial killer, for example Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson.
