This Weeks New Arrivals – July 20th

We got in a ton of great new records recently.  Here’s a few of our favorites:

cremallerasCREMALLERAS – Mercado Negro LP

The second 12” from Monterrey / CDMX based duo CREMALLERAS features members of RATAS DEL VATICANO, SOGA, and HETEROFOBIA playing raw yet tuneful punk. A searing Spanish-language commentary on modern day existence in Mexico.

Blonde and brunette. Dog and cat. Lemon and onion. Friend and foam. The change has been made! You can scratch your seven-year itch freely now: TY SEGALL and WHITE FENCE are become one again, regrooving what we once called Hair into what is now Joy. Hair grew out of a simpler time, man! If, as the dyphrenic duo indeed affirm on Joy, rock in 2018 is dead, don’t come around here looking for no burial. Instead, find Joy caught up in the commencement of on-beyond rock; music made with the old tools, but emitted from a fresh new, single-celled organism. This time, the old “one and one make one” line does not apply. Hair had the quality of emulsion—drops of Segall suspended in Fence; a compound of White dispersed over sheets of Ty. With Joy, Tim and Ty arrive without traveling from the same place, occupy one single headspace, finishing the other’s phrases, pulling licks from each other’s places. Singing and thinking and laughing as one. Calling themselves from inside the house. C-c-c-creepy! Both these fellows have been known to trifle with tropic pasts and reactivate vintage visions within their new music. Not now. Now is the only time this time—Joy is their own sound of today, a shared individuality, prisming all possible stances into an unseamly metastasis that FLOWS for 15 ebbcentric tracks. Plus, since it ends at the beginning, it never has to stop. LOOP that shit!

counterCOUNTER INTUITS – Vietnamese Lighter 7″

One of the greatest thrills of running a record label is the opportunity to work with your heroes and it is with a great deal of excitement that I release a brand new COUNTER INTUITS 7″ on Total Punk. Ohio is a state known for it’s punk legacy and Columbus has a long running and strongly defined sounds of it’s own. Lou Reed worship filtered through the Electric Eels. Grating broken down pop songs with melodies simultaneously damaged and confoundingly catchy. One of it’s greatest and longest standing practitioners is RON HOUSE (THOMAS JEFFERSON SLAVE APTS., GREAT PLAINS, EGO SUMMIT, et al.). A man who’s lyrical abilities and biting edge seem to improve with age (I can only imagine what he’ll be producing when he turns 100) and his partnership with fellow Columbus stalwart JARED PHILLIPS (TIMES NEW VIKING) has produced some of the best music of their respective careers, which is I why I’m so happy to be releasing their newest effort. A two song burner with dizzying circular guitar loops, trashy drums, and Ron House’s signature nasally snarl. 100% TOTAL PUNK! Edition of 500.

“Since John Coltrane and Rashied Ali created ‘Interstellar Space’ with only sax and percussion, opening through this limited line-up new realms of expression, often raw, hard, yet incredibly direct and open, many have seen the opportunities it offered and followed their example. Playing in a trio format is for many already a tough task, but relinquishing the typical role of the bass as melodic and rhythmic anchor point, offers a total freedom of interaction, but it’s like poetry without rhyme, there is no comfort zone to fall back into, no safe haven, no safety net, it’s swim or drown. Without technical mastery, creativity and close listening skills, it’s hard to create anything meaningful at all.”— STEVE and RAVI are indeed true masters of the hive minded sonic attack. Swirling madness and whispered genius. I’ve seen it live and I can attest, it is incredible. Like the other singles in series 3, there are 300 copies on black vinyl with hand stamped labels housed in a hand stamped j-card sleeve. A one-time pressing.

frskeFRKSE – Denigration Rapture 7″

A masterful amalgamation of sinister tape loops and unsettling industrial clangs makes ‘Denigration Rapture’ a hypnotic conflagration replete with pulsing Kraut drones, sampled vocal/musical textures and crunchy power electronics. You can feel the unnatural barbs of the dark forces sinking in while they slowly lull you down to depths and hold you there forever. Drown in this glory. Like the other singles in series 3, there are 300 copies on black vinyl with hand stamped labels housed in a hand stamped j-card sleeve. A one-time pressing.

shit2S.H.I.T. – What Do You Stand For? LP

A brief but dense dose of simply hulking intense turmoil. Subtle terminology is trite, so to get to the point: S.H.I.T., the LP, blurs by in under twenty minutes of thrashing hardcore gristle. Gone are the tell-tale training wheels of delayed vocals and endless layers of feedback, here now are the tighter louder songs we’d hoped S.H.I.T. would write. A piercing musical rallying cry for the listless and ever approaching bulldoze march of the future, wrapped in cellophane transfers of melted early hardcore and the best of the last decade’s fresh take on simplicity and power. What Do You Stand For? comes on 150-gram vinyl housed in a 24pt reverse board jacket designed by legendary hc punk outsider and former S.H.I.T. designer, JAYBO. The intricately illustrated hellish image was produced with bleach onto a massive bedsheet, though the entire package is wrapped in a self censored slip cover, seemingly in the service of protecting the purchaser’s dignity. Additional design by RYAN TONG. Also comes with lyric insert and download card.

turnitaroundCompilation – TURN IT AROUND LP

This compilation inspired by the documentary Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk is a sprawling collector’s edition double album and a perfect audio companion to the film. Ninety minutes of music over thirty-five rare, unreleased and / or out-of-print tracks from bands like Green Day, Rancid, Neurosis, NOFX, Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine, Mr. T Experience, Jawbreaker, Pinhead Gunpowder, Filth, Blatz, Sweet Children, Isocracy and many more. This album is must-have vinyl for both new and old fans of the early East Bay punk music scene. Proceeds from this compilation go to the Women’s Daytime Drop In Center, a non-profit program in Berkeley, CA, empowering women and children to move from the streets to a home by providing ongoing and intensive counseling, case management services, daily support groups, a comprehensive children’s program, a variety of referral services, and a transitional housing program for four single parent families.
Blue colored vinyl.

bellwitch1BELL WITCH – Longing LP

Upon its release in 2017, Bell Witch’s Mirror Reaper cemented the Seattle duo’s status as one of doom metal’s most formidable acts. Its single, monolithic track also served as a tribute to the band’s former drummer Adrian Guerra, who tragically passed away the year before.
Five years earlier, on the back of a highly praised demo, the band released their debut album, Longing. Featuring the original line-up of Dylan Desmond and Adrian Guerra (RIP), the album was recorded by Brandon Fitzsimons (Wormwood, Samothrace). It is a time-stretching journey through darkness, pain, and suffering, and doomed minimalism that is now considered a classic of the genre.
Originally released on CD by Profound Lore in 2012 and on vinyl by The Flenser, the vinyl edition has been out of print for several years until now. The Flenser is proud to offer a new pressing of this timeless masterpiece.  Longing is packaged in a thick, old-style case-wrapped gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves.

churchburnCHURCHBURN – None Shall Live…The Hymns of Misery LP

It’s been 4 years since the first album The Awaiting Coffins was released. CHURCHBURN is proud to finally unveil the new album None Shall Live…The Hymns of Misery. Churchburn is the musical collaboration between two of the undergrounds masters of misery. DAVE SUZUKI (VITAL REMAINS) and RAY MCCAFFREY (SINS OF ANGELS, GRIEF). The two have set out to share with the world their love of the riff. Not only the heaviest but also the most haunting. Each song is crafted with the most sinister of intent. Churchburn want the listener to feel a true sense of dread as each song progresses. Includes guest appearances by ANDY GRANT (THE VOMIT ARSONSIST) and former member MIKE CARDOSO, along with new members TIMMY ST. AMOUR (HOWL) on guitar and DEREK MONIZ (HEADROT, WREAK, BLACK ACID PROPHECY) on bass. Recorded, engineered and mixed at Machines With Magnets by SETH MANCHESTER, mastered at Audiosiege by BRAD BOATRIGHT for maximum hearing damage. Features artwork by NESTOR AVALOS. LP housed in gatefold jackets and pressed on colored vinyl.

guidedGUIDED BY VOICES – You Own the Night 7″

With the recent Space Gun, Guided By Voices has focused on just a single album per year while touring the new songs across America throughout 2018.  That doesn’t mean that the ultra-prolific Robert Pollard is vacationing or sunning himself by the pool. Here’s a 7” vinyl preview of the insanely anthemic “You Own the Night” (from the forthcoming February 2019 double album Zeppelin Over China) backed with “Your Cricket is Rather Unique” (from the forthcoming February 2020 album Street Party)   The single is a limited edition of 1000  – just 300 copies going to retail.

lieLIE – Hounds LP

“In 2016 we released Truth or Consequences, and here we are in 2018 with another excellent record from Vancouver’s LIE. Earlier this year Lié flew down to Austin to record with Ian Rundell (Spray Paint, The Rebel, Ghetto Ghouls, Xetas, etc.). The result is cold, hostile, and most of all dark. Since their last record, they’ve been touring a lot in the US, Canada, and Europe as both Lié and some of their other more electronic-leaning projects (for those keeping score that’s: MINIMAL VIOLENCE, SBDC, KOBAN, SIGSALY). Lots more touring in 2018 for Lié in the USA and our friendly more-supportive-of-the-arts northern neighbor as well.”

powerPOWER – Turned ON

Being that Power is a band with just three members has meant that everybody carves their own name into the stone, a trio de force who share the Atlantic weight equally upon their shoulders. In the time since their debut album, Electric Glitter Boogie, finer details have been ironed out, their craft honed to a sharp point: 2018’s Turned On is a sonic triumph. Three days in the studio has given birth to a titan—a thunderous recording that’d make Lemmy and the fellas blush.
From the get-go there’s an outrageousness in songwriting that is present on many classic R‘n’R follow up albums. Stomping boogie, raw glam, punk‘n’roll, blues bashing and primitive heavy metal exaltation. There’s not a moment of falter or doubt to be heard, it’s purely sweat and confidence here. They’ve created an album equally drenched in the classic moves of loud guitar music (think the sounds oozed by Australian acts of the ’70s and a certain band from England featuring Fast Eddie Clarke on guitar, Philthy Animal Taylor on drums and God himself on bass) while also completely stepping forward on their own hero’s journey—a journey through many moons of rock and roll. Be turned on.

keallyKELLEY STOLTZ – Natural Causes LP

The tenth album from San Francisco-based singer-songwriter KELLEY STOLTZ. Nine new classics in classic Stoltz-style! “Stoltz’s love of ’60s Brit Invasion and ’80s post-punk sounds is well known so it’s no surprise echoes of both loom large on his latest album. Be it the dream-pop of the title track, the lo-fi psychedelic rumble of “My Friend” or the indie-disco of “Decisions Decisions,” he combines spiky gutiar lines with whistleable pop melodies, then nicely drenches them in chorus and reverb…”—Duncan Fletcher, Shindig

madcaddiesMAD CADDIES  – Punk Rocksteady LP

MAD CADDIES successfully combine a wide range of influences—dixieland, reggae, punk, ska, and more—while selling more than 400,000 records! They consistently assemble a collection of songs which are diverse yet cohesive from start to finish. So, when Fat Mike (NOFX) had the vision of putting a reggae twist on some classic punk tracks, there was really only one band for the job… the Caddies. With Punk Rocksteady, Mad Caddies lend their unique style to 12 of the most popular punk songs from the past couple decades—Bad Religion, Green Day, Against Me!, SNUFF, Op Ivy, Descendents, NOFX, Misfits, Lagwagon—they’ve even managed to turn a Propagandhi track into a ska song, proving that ska doesn’t suck after all! With such a diverse sound and wide range of punk rock hits, Punk Rocksteady is sure to appeal to fans of any musical taste. Keep an eye out for a Mad Caddies show near you, as they will be touring the world throughout 2018 in support of Punk Rocksteady.

florenceFLORENCE AND MACHINE – High As Hope LP

Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. 2018 release, the fourth album from six-time Grammy-nominee Florence + the Machine. High As Hope is the sound of an artist who appears more certain than ever of herself. Florence writes about her teens and twenties with a renewed, more mature perspective: of growing up in South London, of family, relationships and art itself. Florence and the Machine formed in London in 2007, consisting of vocalist Florence Welch, keyboardist Isabella Summers, and a collaboration of other musicians. The band’s music received praise across the media, especially from the BBC, which played a large part in their rise to prominence by promoting Florence and the Machine as part of BBC Introducing.

gorillazGORILLAZ – The Now Now LP

Vinyl LP pressing including digital download. 2018 release, the sixth studio album from the acclaimed British ‘band’. With the announcement of The Now Now, the band also introduced a new fictional band member, Ace from Cartoon Network’s animated series The Powerpuff Girls. In the story, Ace is a temporary replacement for Murdoc, who has been incarcerated. Gorillaz is singer 2D, bassist Murdoc Niccals, guitarist Noodle and drummer Russel Hobbs. Created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, their acclaimed eponymous debut album was released in 2001. The BRIT and Grammy Award winning band’s subsequent albums are Demon Days (2005), Plastic Beach (2010) and The Fall (2011). A truly global phenomenon, Gorillaz have topped charts around the world and toured the globe from San Diego to Syria, picking up hundreds of millions of streams and record sales along the way. Gorillaz have achieved success in entirely ground-breaking ways, winning numerous awards including the coveted Jim Henson Creativity Honor and are recognized by The Guinness Book Of World Records as the planet’s Most Successful Virtual Act.

mazzyMAZZY STAR – Still LP

Vinyl LP pressing. 2018 EP from the ethereal Americana duo, the first new music from the band since 2014. Includes 3 new tracks – “Quiet, The Winter Harbor”, “That Way Again” and “Still” – alongside an alternate version of ‘So Tonight That I Might See’ from their biggest album, of the same name from 1993. Mazzy Star is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Monica, California, in 1989 from remnants of the group Opal. Founding member David Roback’s friend Hope Sandoval became the group’s vocalist when Kendra Smith left Opal. Roback and Sandoval are the creative center of the band, with Sandoval as lyricist and Roback as composer of the majority of the band’s material.

deadcrossDEAD CROSS – Dead Cross 10″

Vinyl LP pressing. Dead Cross emerged out of a series of impractical schemes, fallen-through plans, and last-minute musical experimentation. Shows were scheduled before a single song was written, fans were formed before even one show was played. The chaos of it’s creation seems apt; after all, the band is comprised entirely of artists who have thrived playing tightly-coiled turmoil – intelligent dissonance disguised as disorder. Consisting of Dave Lombardo, Justin Pearson, Michael Crain, and Mike Patton, the impressive, expansive, and eclectic list of prior bands collectively played in would be enough to ensure the unyielding ferocity of the music… but a resume isn’t necessary, here. Dead Cross stands on it’s own, speaks volumes with it’s multilayered evil-genius vocals, manic guitar riffs, and brutal rhythms. This new eponymous 2018 EP includes two studio tracks (“Skin of a Redneck” and “My Perfect Prisoner”) and and two remixes (“Shillelagh – Panicker Remix” and “Church of the Motherf***ers – Planet B Remix).
